We are a small organization with a limited staff. Visits by appointment allow us to make best use of our staff time to complete all our daily and weekly care of the donkeys.

We are about 35 minutes from the Denver International Airport and about 23 miles east of Denver. We are only 2 miles off I-70 on mostly paved roads.

No, to efficiently use your time and ours, we require all potential adopters to first complete our online Adoption Questionnaire to determine if the applicant meets our adoption criteria and we have donkeys on site that might be a good match with the applicant.

We are a 501©(3) public non-profit organization. We rely on private contributions and grants to operate. Donations buy feed, pay for veterinary and hoof care, pay our skilled staff and provide outreach services.

Because we have experienced staff and we are the prime source for high maintenance and elderly donkeys, the cost of caring for our herd is much higher than the cost of private ownership or other equine rescues. The minimum cost is $1000 per year.

Historically we received donkeys from kill pens, the Bureau of Land Management, private owners, law enforcement and other rescues. Because the kill-pen industry has become so corrupted our mission has evolved in a different direction. Today, most of our residents come from private owners who can no longer care for the donkeys and other rescues needing our two decade plus expertise to treat a special needs donkey.

When adopting from Longhopes, it is a requirement that if-for any reason-an adopter can no longer care for their donkeys, the animals must be returned to our shelter.

While our ultimate goal is always to find a donkey their permanent, forever home, we understand that life changes like illness, divorce, or relocation happen.

If a returned donkey is young and healthy enough, we will work to find them another wonderful adoptive home.

However, if they are elderly or have special medical needs, they are provided retirement at Longhopes to live out the rest of their days surrounded by love at the sanctuary.
