These dear donkeys have endured enough hardship to last a lifetime. For the rest of their natural lives, Longhopes will guarantee them permanent sanctuary at our shelter.
See our E.A.R.S. page for information on sponsoring a donkey in our rehabilitation program.
Lilly has lost at least 2 homes in the last 6 years. She is 29 and has some major arthritic problems. Lilly's time may be limited but for now she has all the comforts a donkey could want- including a permanent safe home for the remainder of her days in the sun.
Thank you to Janet Mallow for being Millie's Guardian Angel.
Millie was picked up in a snowstorm from a home with no shelter. We believe she is 30-40 years old and probably had some rough times in her life. In spite of that, she is in good health.
Millie is a survivor. She is tough and she knows what she wants which is a special grain diet, lots of time in the pasture and treats whenever they become available.
Millie is determined to outlive us all.
Oscar
Lucky Oscar has stolen the hearts of everyone at Longhopes.
Oscar is age 31. He has a long resume. He was trained for riding, packing and racing. We are told he won $35,000 for the origial breeder in pack burro racing and another $3,000 as the Champion standard jack at the 1997 National Western Stock Show.
Nevertheless when Oscar's useful years ended, he found himself without a secure retirement home. Longhopes stepped in to remedy the situation. Oscar has poor teeth, cataracts and some arthritis. But he is a big, mellow donkey who loves attention and the security of life in a big herd of donkeys, where he gets two special meals a day and a warm barn each night.
Thanks to Justin & Chuck Loerwald for being Oscar's Guardian Angels so Longhopes can meet all of Oscar's special needs and make his last days, his best days.
Hattie
Thank you Susan Popp for sponsoring our sweet Hattie. Hattie arrived at Longhopes emaciated with overgrown, twisted hooves and cuts and scars all over her body. We estimate her age at 35+ so we weren't sure if Hattie was going to make it. We underestimated the strength of Hattie's spirit! This lovely girl is not only surviving, but she's thriving. Hattie is calm, affectionate and enjoys every visitor to the shelter.
